Y3 Charity Lenten Fundraising

Y3 have been making mini-Rosary beads to raise money for our chosen charity, WaterAid. Ten beads attached to a handy key-ring make for a decade of the Rosary that can be carried anywhere. We will sell these in class and then to the school to raise money for WaterAid.

World Book Day

The whole school celebrated World Book Day and dressed up as some of our favourite characyers. In Y3, we had superheroes, Roald Dahl characters, princesses and even a unicorn! Willy Wonka himself even came to hand out his very own chocolate bars and somebody won a golden ticket!

Burnley Youth Theatre Visit

Burnley Youth Theatre visited school to carry out drama workshops with each class. Y3's workshop focused on team work and how we can show emotion  and read other people's.

Y3 Visit to the Bridgewater Hall

Y3 visited the Bridgewater Hall to hear the world-class Halle Orchestra perform a concert that took us to places around the world. We travelled from the rainforest, via Maurice Ravel's Bolero, to Rome with Respighi's The Pines of Rome! We had a fatastic time, many of us would like to go back again!

Y3 have been preparing for their Lets Go Sing concert! We welcomed Rose from the Lets Go Sing company who gave us our final singing session where we rehearsed and revised our songs. 

Y3 spent some time in the peace garden, where we focused on one aspect of Catholic Social Teaching- 'The Common Good'. We thought about and discussed what 'The Common Good' is and how we might be able to contribute towards it. We also met our CAFOD mascot for 'The Common Good' - Chikondi the giraffe.

Year 3 have been measuring volume. We discussed what volume is and what equipment we need to measure it. We looked at a range of different scales and thought about which measuring cylinder would be most suited to particular quantities.

Y3 Parent and Child Lunch

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the Y3 parent and child lunch. It was lovely to have the opportunity to take some time out of a busy day to enjoy some quality time! Here are some of the highlights:

Y3 Remembers

This November, we have been thinking about and saying thank you for all those have fought and made sacrifices in conflicts around the world. To mark Rememberence day, we discussed the significance of the poppy and listened to Edward Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. We were all very moved by the music.

Y3 Mental Health and Wellbeing Day.

For our mental health and wellbeing day, we learned about how to look after our mind. We developed skills and stratergies to improve our resilience and regulate our moods.

In Art and Design, we have been studying cave paintings. For our research, we looked at cave paintings from the Chauvet Pont d'Arc caves in Southern France. Y3 were captivated by the images of paintings that are thousands of years old. Here is the clip from the film The Cave of Forgotten Dreams, which we watched in class.

In English this half term we have been reading Michael Bond's Paddington Bear. One of the features we have been studying is conjunctions. After identifying the conjunction in a compound sentence, we tried moving its position within the sentence and seeing whether the sentence still made sense. We then tried to join two other simple sentences using our conjunction. The conjuctions we have been focusing on are: 'when', 'after', 'before' and 'while'.

Here are some photographs from our pupil-led collective worship. A group of pupils chose our intentions, wrote prayers and directed the class worship session by themselves.

Our cave paintings

In Art and Design this half term, Y3 looked at cave paintings; for our final piece of work, we collaborated to produce a 'cave wall' inspired by recent archeological discoveries. We started with a case study of the Lascaux caves and thought about the various things we could see. We realised that certain animals and stick figures were shown frequently and that these were often repeated in different sizes. As we progressed, we experimented using a range of media in different ways to produce variations in shade and tone. We made some plans and recorded our ideas in preparation for our final collaboration of a 'cave wall'. We experimented with enlarging images to scale. All of these skills helped us with our final piece. Finally, we evaluated our work by thinking about what we liked and what we could have done better. One thing we all agreed on was that it was much more difficult working on a vertical, bumpy surface (as a cave wall would have been) compared to a smooth, flat surface.

In History, as part of Black History Month, we studied Rosa Parks. We practised our History skills by examining evidence and drawing conclusions of what life was life like in America before and after Rosa Parks and the bus boycott.
